Nail Bracing

Nail bracing is a simple and effective treatment option for painful and involuted nails that avoids toenail surgery, requires no needles, no anaesthetic, no rest or down time and quick resumption of activities. Similar to the bracing of teeth used in orthodontics, nail bracing is designed to restore the natural shape of a nail to reduce re-occurrence of ingrown toenails, or pain from nails that start to curl inwards (known as an involuted nail).

How it Works

This system uses a titanium wire that we apply and shape then bond to the base of the nail using a composite gel. A UV light is used to harden the composite, creating a gentle tension that effectively braces the nail in that position. The brace will then retain the shape of the nail as it grows out to prevent any curling/ingrown nails causing pain and restore the natural shape of the nail.

The nail brace will stay on the nail and grow out with the natural growth. A big toenail takes roughly 9-12 months for the whole nail plate to grow out and roughly 6-9 months for the smaller toes. The brace will generally stay on for the entire time but can be removed earlier if needed. Follow up appointments are required to monitor the nail brace as it grows out to ensure its progression and another brace may be applied if required in more severe cases while also providing other conservative treatments until it has grown out completely.
